Most faults show up as one thing (a trip switch that won't stay up, a room with no power, a light that flickers) but the cause can be somewhere else entirely. Resetting and hoping isn't a repair. We test methodically until we find it, then fix it and tell you what it was.

That covers electrical testing, wiring repairs, power troubleshooting and safety upgrades, as well as the socket and switch repairs on our Google profile.

Before you call: three checks

1. Look at the fuse board and see which switch has tripped. 2. Unplug everything on that circuit, then reset it. 3. If it stays on, plug things back in one at a time. The one that trips it is often the culprit. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, that's one for us.

Switch off at the main switch and call if you can smell burning, see scorch marks, hear buzzing or crackling, or there's water near anything electrical.

Common faults we sort

  • An RCD or trip switch that keeps tripping
  • Sockets or a whole room with no power
  • Lights that flicker, buzz or won't come on
  • Damaged, cracked or warm sockets and switches
  • Wiring damaged by work, pests or water

Questions

Faults and repairs: common questions

Why does my electricity keep tripping?

Usually one of three things: a faulty appliance, a circuit that's overloaded, or damaged wiring letting current leak to earth. Try the three checks above first. If it still trips with everything unplugged, the fault is in the wiring and needs testing. There's more in our guide to tripping electrics.

Can you fix a fault someone else couldn't find?

Often, yes. Rebecca had a fuse board problem others had struggled with, and it was diagnosed quickly. Methodical testing is how.

Should I just reset the trip switch?

Once, after unplugging things, yes. If it trips again, stop resetting it. It's telling you something is wrong.

Do you explain what was wrong?

Always, in plain English. You'll know what the fault was, what we did, and whether anything else needs watching.
