Fuse boards
Why fuse boards get replaced
Worcester and anywhere within 50 miles. Domestic and commercial.
The fuse board (also called a consumer unit) is where every circuit in your home starts. Older boards were built for a different age: fewer appliances, no RCD protection, and fuse wire that can be repaired with the wrong size in a hurry. A modern board cuts the power in a fraction of a second if something goes wrong.
How the day goes
The power is off for most of the day, so we'll talk about the fridge, the freezer and anyone working from home before we start. The old board comes out, the new one goes in, and each circuit is connected, labelled and tested.
Modern boards are more sensitive, which is the point. Testing sometimes shows up an old fault that the previous board was hiding. If it does, we'll explain what it is and what it takes to fix, before doing anything more.
Signs your board is due
- A fuse box with fuse wire or cartridge fuses
- A wooden backboard, or a brown or cast-iron box
- No RCD (the test button) protecting your sockets
- Trips you can't explain, or scorching around the board
- You're rewiring, extending or adding big new circuits

What customers say
From people who've had us in.
Brilliant installation of our new fuse [board], very efficient and extremely clean. I would definitely recommend.
I had an ongoing issue with my fuse board that others struggled to fix. They diagnosed the problem quickly and explained everything clearly. Highly recommend!
We've had two reasonably small jobs done by John now. Both were very competitively priced. John turned up exactly on time as promised and did an excellent job.
Questions
Fuse boards: common questions
Is a fuse board the same as a consumer unit?
Yes. "Consumer unit" is the trade name. Most people call it the fuse board or the fuse box.
How long will I be without power?
Usually most of a working day for a straightforward swap. We'll give you a clear idea in the quote so you can plan around it.
Do I need a new board if nothing's wrong?
Not always. If yours has fuse wire, no RCD protection or shows signs of heat, it's worth replacing. If it's fairly recent and working well, we'll tell you to leave it.
What's the difference between an RCD and an RCBO?
An RCD protects a group of circuits and switches them off together if it detects a fault. An RCBO does the same job for a single circuit, so one fault doesn't take out half the house. We'll explain the options for your home.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes. Every circuit is tested, and you get the certificate.
